Certification according to the Japanese Agriculture Standard for Organic Products (JAS)
The Japanese market for organic products is a very interesting market for exporters as demand still
exceeds internal production.
General information
Since the year 2000 Japan has an own organic standard. All products exported to Japan have to be certified
according to that standard and have to have the "JAS seal". There can be exceptions from that rule if
countries are recognized as equivalent but in general it is not sufficient to be certified according to
EU Regulation 2092/91. Please contact us, we check your particular situation!
The JAS regulation differs in some points slightly from EU Regulation 2092/91. Please check with the
JAS website
for further details.
Particularities
The JAS standard requires the so-called grading-process. This is an internal JAS quality
audit to be conducted by the company. The company has to nominate a "grading manager" who
checks if the procedures in the company are implemented and fulfil the JAS standard. We recommend that the grading
manager participates in a training organized by a JAS accredited certifier.
