Certification according to the National Organic Program (NOP) of the United States
General information
The "National Organic Program" is part of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA). After a several years
lasting process of consultation with all stakeholders of the organic industry this standard came into
force in the year 2002.
All producers, processors and traders, that want to export to the United States, have to be certified
according to NOP. As well all suppliers of raw materials of a processor have to be certified according to NOP.
There are some exemptions from that rule, please contact us for more information regarding that special point.
Particularities
The NOP standard differs in several points from the EU regulation or the JAS standard. Examples are
i.e. the handling of manure or buffer zones.
Very important for NOP is the so called "Organic System Plan". The company has to describe all organic
procedures that guarantee the organic quality.
The Organic System Plan has to be sent to BCS. We check if your procedures are in accordance with the
NOP standard before an inspection can take place.
For details about the NOP standard, please have a look at the
NOP website.
